Here we go again… and again and again
December 4, 2007
Well, I’ve mad many attempts at keeping some kind of blog and most of them haven’t lasted more than a couple of weeks before I slack off. I’m taking a new approach with this blog in a couple of ways, first I’m going with a wordpress blog because I like the idea of using an open standard rather than a proprietary one like I was using with iWeb. By the way me and Dara’s iWeb site is still up with a bunch of pictures, if you want to see it the links to the right there.
Anyhow, getting back to open standards. Since getting a Mac I have to admit I’ve enjoyed the integration Apple builds into its products. Everything works together nicely and that’s great. Unfortunately just because everything works together doesn’t mean it’s going to work the way you want it to. Apple does a really good job on the desk top but their web tools just aren’t up to snuff.
That brings me to word press. For those of you who don’t know word press is an open source blogging platform that allows you to have a professional looking blog but without a lot of work. It’s very similar to Blogspot or any of a number of other blog tools in that respect, but what attracts me to it is that it is extremely extendable. This means that I can start a pretty simple blog today, have it hosted by wordpress.com and if in the future I want to make it bigger or migrate it to my own domain I can.
An open format also allows me to integrate with other open/semi-open online tools. Things like Flickr, Facebook, Google Reader, etc. I’ve decided that when it comes to the online space you really have to just use the best tool available rather than try to shoe horn your needs into anyone’s all-in-one solution, whether they be Apple, Google, Microsoft or anyone else who thinks they know everything you need. Let’s face it, they just don’t.
Oh, and regarding how often this blog is going to be updated: as often as I want, no more or less.
